About this practice

A 3-minute noting session for perfectionism, at midday. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: perfectionism

Perfectionism treats a mistake as evidence rather than an incident. The bar rises precisely where self-worth is attached, which is why it never becomes achievable.

It tends to show up as:

  • Endless polishing before sharing
  • Fear of a wrong step
  • Delaying work until conditions are ideal

A practice with no grade attached is a useful counterweight. There is no wrong way to do the next few minutes.

Doing this at lunch

  • Do it before eating rather than after, so you are not working against digestion
  • Leaving the desk matters more than the session length
  • Take the headphones off afterwards so the break registers

A break that happens at the same desk is only half a break.

How noting works

Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.

  • Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
  • Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
  • Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point.
  2. 0:15You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  3. 0:28Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
  4. 0:44Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
  5. 0:57Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
  6. 1:11Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  7. 1:22Each time your mind hands you the demand that everything be exactly right, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  8. 1:42Feel the weight of the bar that is always too high somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
  9. 2:00Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  10. 2:11Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the fear of a wrong step is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  11. 2:30If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
  12. 2:44Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  13. 2:55Come back slowly. There's no prize for finishing fast.
