Focus session for thesis writing: 25 minutes, vinyl crackle, when nothing else has worked today
25 minutes of thesis writing, with vinyl crackle and a note on what to do when you drift.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Loosen your grip on whatever you're holding, or imagine loosening it. Nothing else has worked today. That is not a reason to skip this. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
