25-minute thesis writing session with white noise and a timer, when you are at home and cannot settle
Sit down, press start, and add to the pile for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no. Being at home and unable to settle is a very specific problem. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
4What to put on
white noise — Flat across all frequencies and very effective at covering speech. Some people find it harsh after an hour; keep the volume low.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
