Focus session for admin and email: 50 minutes, forest at dusk, on a low-energy afternoon
50 minutes of admin and email, with forest at dusk and a note on what to do when you drift.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
4What to put on
forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.
