Focus session for studying: 50 minutes, a fan or air conditioner, when you are short on time
50 minutes of studying, with a fan or air conditioner and a note on what to do when you drift.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Loosen your grip on whatever you're holding, or imagine loosening it. Pick this one when you are short on time. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
