A 50-minute block for thesis writing, with forest at dusk, when you are short on time
A single 50-minute block for thesis writing — sections, not the whole thing.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the first out-breath be longer than the in-breath. Nothing dramatic, just longer. Pick this one when you are short on time. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
2 While the timer runs
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
