Focus session · practising an instrument · 25 min
25-minute practising an instrument session with a fan or air conditioner and a timer, on a low-energy afternoon
Sit down, press start, and drill the hard bars for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your tongue rest down, away from the roof of your mouth. Low-energy afternoons are what this was written for. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
3 When it ends
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
a fan or air conditioner — A constant mechanical hum with no variation. The lack of change is the point — nothing in it asks for your attention.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 25-minute focus block for data work — birds at dawn, if you are doing this in the middle of the day, 25-minute focus session for planning with white noise, when your attention is scattered or 25-minute focus block for practising an instrument — white noise, when you are doing this for the first time.
