Focus session for studying: 45 minutes, brown noise, when you feel restless rather than tired
45 minutes of studying, with brown noise and a note on what to do when you drift.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the floor take your weight through your feet, and stop holding yourself up for a second. Restless is different from tired, and it needs a different approach. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
