90-minute admin and email session with vinyl crackle and a timer, when you are short on time
Sit down, press start, and clear the queue for 90 minutes. One full ultradian cycle, for work that needs a long runway.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. Pick this one when you are short on time. Straight through, at a normal pace.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
2 While the timer runs
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
3 When it ends
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Focus session for admin and email: 50 minutes, rain on a window, when you have been putting it off, Focus session for writing: 50 minutes, a library, before something difficult or Deep work timer: 45 minutes of drawing (vinyl crackle), when the weather has kept you inside.
