50-minute focus session for studying with white noise, before something difficult
50 minutes on studying — reading and notes, not highlighting. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point. It works best in the hour before something difficult. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
white noise — Flat across all frequencies and very effective at covering speech. Some people find it harsh after an hour; keep the volume low.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try 45-minute language practice session with rain on a window and a timer, when you are somewhere unfamiliar, Focus session for design work: 45 minutes, a fireplace, when you have more time than usual or 90-minute language practice session with birds at dawn and a timer, when your attention is scattered.
