45-minute decluttering session with a stream and a timer, on a day that started badly
Sit down, press start, and move things out for 45 minutes. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If you're tired, you can let that be true. Tired is allowed here. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Decide what you will do if you get stuck: write the problem out, then move on.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Deep work timer: 50 minutes of problem solving (a library), when you have been on screens all day, Deep work timer: 25 minutes of editing (café murmur), when you need something unremarkable or Deep work timer: 90 minutes of drawing (birds at dawn), when you are not in the mood.
