Focus session for reading: 50 minutes, vinyl crackle, on a day that started badly
50 minutes of reading, with vinyl crackle and a note on what to do when you drift.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the first out-breath be longer than the in-breath. Nothing dramatic, just longer. A day that started badly does not have to stay that way. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
3 When it ends
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
