25-minute editing session with plain quiet and a timer, after a difficult conversation
Sit down, press start, and cut and tighten for 25 minutes. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing. Difficult conversations leave a residue. This is for the residue. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.
1 Before you start
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- If you are stuck, say the problem out loud. It changes what you can see.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
4What to put on
plain quiet — No added sound at all. If you have a quiet room, that is usually better than any recording of one.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
