50-minute editing session with distant traffic and a timer, when you have tried everything else
Sit down, press start, and cut and tighten for 50 minutes. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let your next exhale be a sigh, if a sigh is what's waiting there. This assumes you have already tried the obvious things. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Promise yourself you will not check anything until the timer ends, including "just quickly".
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Stand up and move for at least two minutes. The break is part of the method, not a reward.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
4What to put on
distant traffic — A low continuous wash from a road you are not on. Familiar and easy to stop hearing.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
