50-minute focus session for editing with brown noise, before you go back to something hard

50 minutes on editing — the boring pass that makes it readable. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Begin with the simple fact that you got here. That already happened. Five minutes here is cheaper than an hour of grinding. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
  • Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
  • Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.

2 While the timer runs

  • If your attention keeps sliding, shorten the next block rather than abandoning this one.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.

3 When it ends

  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

brown noise — Lower and softer than white noise, closer to a waterfall heard from a distance. Good if white noise feels too hissy.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
