45-minute focus session for data work with vinyl crackle, after a difficult conversation
45 minutes on data work — checking as you go. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Unclench your jaw. You were probably holding it without noticing. Difficult conversations leave a residue. This is for the residue. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
3 When it ends
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
