A 45-minute block for problem solving, with forest at dusk, when you want something simple

A single 45-minute block for problem solving — before looking anything up.

45:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
  • Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.

2 While the timer runs

  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
  • Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
  • When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.

3 When it ends

  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
  • Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.

4What to put on

forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
