Focus session for editing: 25 minutes, birds at dawn, before you go back to something hard
25 minutes of editing, with birds at dawn and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Turn your phone face down if it's within reach. If it's in another room, even better. Five minutes here is cheaper than an hour of grinding. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Remember that motivation usually arrives after starting, not before.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
2 While the timer runs
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- If you feel the urge to check something, write it on the paper beside you and keep going. Deal with the list afterwards.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
3 When it ends
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
- Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
