About this practice

7 minutes to meet self-criticism with less of a fight. A grounding practice, ahead of a full day. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-criticism

Self-criticism is a habit of speech, not an accurate report. The same inner voice repeats whether or not the evidence supports it.

It tends to show up as:

  • A running commentary on your mistakes
  • Harsh words you would never say aloud to someone else
  • Reviewing old failures in detail

The practice is not to argue with the voice, but to speak to yourself in a tone that does not require an argument.

Doing this before a busy day

  • Do it before the first message or notification
  • Aim for steadiness rather than energy
  • Decide the first task afterwards, not during

The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Let your forehead smooth out. Most of us hold a small frown there all day.
  2. 0:14Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
  3. 0:30Let your body feel heavier than it did a minute ago. Let the chair or the floor take it.
  4. 0:46Let your attention drop to the level of your shoulders and stay there a moment.
  5. 1:00Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  6. 1:11Let your ribs widen on the in-breath instead of your shoulders lifting.
  7. 1:24Notice your ears, which mostly just receive things.
  8. 1:35Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  9. 1:47Feel the skin around your eyes. Let the muscles behind them go loose.
  10. 2:00If the record of your mistakes starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  11. 2:17Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
  12. 2:34Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
  13. 2:46Remain here for a few more breaths.
  14. 2:56Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  15. 3:09Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  16. 3:23I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  17. 3:35If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  18. 3:50If you're counting the minutes, that's fine. Count them and come back.
  19. 4:03Let the exhale empty you a little more than usual, but not to the point of strain.
  20. 4:18A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  21. 4:29Nothing about the criticism you would never aim at a friend has to be explained or justified in this room.
  22. 4:46Notice how the record of your mistakes changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  23. 5:03Notice the first breath of the day versus this one. They're the same mechanism.
  24. 5:17If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
  25. 5:31You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
  26. 5:43A short silence. Let it be empty.
  27. 5:53The floor is holding you right now. You do not have to hold yourself up.
  28. 6:07Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
  29. 6:20If you drifted off, that was rest, and rest counts.
  30. 6:32Let this one be unhurried.
