About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for self-doubt. A softening session you can do when you are at your limit. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this when you are overwhelmed

  • Do not decide priorities during it
  • Pick the shortest session available here
  • When you finish, write down the first physical action on paper

The pile looks less like a pile once the alarm stops ringing. Sort it after, not during.

How softening works

Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.

  • Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
  • Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
  • If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Feel your ribs move. That is all the machinery you need to pay attention to right now.
  2. 0:15With every out-breath, soften one place. Shoulders first, then jaw, then the space behind the eyes.
  3. 0:30Let the rhythm of your breathing set the pace, not the words.
  4. 0:43Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
  5. 0:55Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  6. 1:09Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
  7. 1:22Whatever the small voice saying you cannot is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
  8. 1:38Picture the question mark over your ability as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  9. 1:57Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  10. 2:10Remind yourself, slowly: I am safe in this moment, even while the fear that you are not enough is here. Safety and difficulty can share a room.
  11. 2:30If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
  12. 2:44Find the tightest place and simply breathe near it. Warmth does the softening, not effort.
  13. 2:58Come back to the room through your senses, one at a time.
