About this practice
When financial stress shows up before public speaking, this 15-minute noting session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this before public speaking
- Do it somewhere private, or in the washroom if needed
- Slow the exhale deliberately and check your speaking pace after
- Warm the voice by reading a line aloud, not by staying silent
Rushing is the tell of nerves. A slower breath now is what sets a slower pace in the room.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Quick check: is anything genuinely urgent in this exact minute? Usually the answer is no.
- 0:14There's no need to try harder than this.
- 0:25Bring your attention to where your body meets the surface underneath you.
- 0:38If it helps, imagine your attention is a torch beam. Right now it's wide and soft.
- 0:53Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
- 1:05Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
- 1:21Notice your breathing, without changing it.
- 1:31Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
- 1:42Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
- 1:53Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
- 2:05Start at the top of your head. Notice the scalp, which you almost never notice.
- 2:19Notice where the fear about money in the night lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 2:38Notice the space around the arithmetic that will not balance. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
- 2:57Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 3:08Each time your mind hands you the worry that follows the bills, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
- 3:28When the fear about money in the night arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 3:48Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
- 4:00Remain here for a few more breaths.
- 4:10Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
- 4:23Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 4:35Just the breath, still.
- 4:44Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 4:55Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
- 5:07No rush to move on.
- 5:16If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
- 5:30Let your whole body be as heavy as it wants to be.
- 5:43Stay here a little longer.
- 5:52Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
- 6:05Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
- 6:18Let your body keep settling.
- 6:27Let each breath out be a small letting go of the muscles around your ribs.
- 6:41Feel your face. It's probably softer than it was five minutes ago.
- 6:54Let the quiet do its work.
- 7:04Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 7:18Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
- 7:30You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 7:43If your body wants to move, let it move, then come back.
- 7:56Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
- 8:07We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 8:21Your mind will leave about a hundred times. Come back about a hundred times.
- 8:35Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
- 8:47Small efforts are the whole method.
- 8:57If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
- 9:10Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
- 9:21Nothing here needs to be efficient.
- 9:31Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
- 9:44A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 9:54If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
- 10:07If you've lost track of where we were, you haven't lost anything important.
- 10:20I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
- 10:32Let this be easy, if easy is available.
- 10:43Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
- 10:55Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
- 11:06Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
- 11:16Nothing about the arithmetic that will not balance has to be explained or justified in this room.
- 11:31You are allowed to be unimpressed by the worry that follows the bills. Indifference is a legitimate response.
- 11:47Let the breath move at the speed of a sleeping person.
- 11:59If you catch yourself fighting the fear about money in the night, that is worth noticing. The fight usually costs more than the feeling.
- 12:18Whatever the arithmetic that will not balance is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 12:34Let your breathing be boring. Boring is good here.
- 12:45If you're thinking about the next thing on your list, that list will still be there.
- 13:00Notice whether you're breathing or holding. Start breathing again.
- 13:11If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
- 13:25Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
- 13:36We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
- 13:46Keep following the air.
- 13:55Let the quiet end on its own rather than cutting it off.
- 14:08Take one more breath at your own pace, then let your attention come back to the room.
