About this practice

A 7-minute self-compassion session for financial stress, at midday. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this at lunch

  • Do it before eating rather than after, so you are not working against digestion
  • Leaving the desk matters more than the session length
  • Take the headphones off afterwards so the break registers

A break that happens at the same desk is only half a break.

How self-compassion works

Self-compassion practice changes the tone of the inner voice rather than the content of the thoughts. It uses the same warmth and steadiness you would offer a friend, applied without requiring you to have earned it.

  • Use the words you would actually say to someone you love
  • Ask what you need, not what you deserve
  • A hand on the chest or belly gives warmth and pressure a place to land

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Notice whether you're leaning forward. Most people are, slightly, all day.
  2. 0:12Small efforts are the whole method.
  3. 0:22Notice your own pulse somewhere. Wrist, throat, wherever you can find it.
  4. 0:35Nothing here is a test of concentration. Drifting off is part of it.
  5. 0:48Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  6. 1:01Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  7. 1:13Feel the middle of your back, the part that never gets attention.
  8. 1:26Feel your upper arms hanging. They're heavier than you remember.
  9. 1:38Feel the tops of your thighs.
  10. 1:48Imagine the fear about money in the night as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  11. 2:07Give the arithmetic that will not balance a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
  12. 2:25Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  13. 2:37Stay with it.
  14. 2:45Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  15. 2:56Let your thumbs rest wherever they landed.
  16. 3:06There's no need to try harder than this.
  17. 3:17If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
  18. 3:31Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  19. 3:43Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  20. 3:54Notice the moment you realise you've drifted. That moment is the whole skill.
  21. 4:07Notice that you don't have to start a breath. It arrives by itself.
  22. 4:20Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  23. 4:31Let the exhale carry a little of the worry that follows the bills with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  24. 4:51Each time your mind hands you the fear about money in the night, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  25. 5:11Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  26. 5:22Notice how quickly your mind labels things: good, bad, boring, nice.
  27. 5:34Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
  28. 5:46A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  29. 5:57You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  30. 6:10Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
  31. 6:21Take one last look at whatever your attention settled on.
  32. 6:33Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
