About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for self-doubt. A grounding session you can do on a plane. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: self-doubt

Self-doubt is a prediction, not a measurement. It reads uncertainty as evidence of inability, which is why it survives despite contrary evidence.

It tends to show up as:

  • Questioning your ability before starting
  • Assuming you are the least capable in the room
  • Hesitating to state an opinion

Confidence is not required to act. This practice lowers the temperature enough that acting stops needing confidence first.

Doing this on a plane

  • Use headphones, and keep the seatbelt on
  • Bring a layer — being cold works against settling
  • Skip alcohol; it makes the alertness worse

Cabin noise is constant and will mask the audio more than you expect. Try the headphones before you settle in.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks.
  2. 0:15You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  3. 0:28Let your attention rest on the out-breath. The in-breath can take care of itself.
  4. 0:42This is not a performance. Nobody is listening to how well you're doing it.
  5. 0:56Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  6. 1:07Follow one full breath from the moment it starts to the moment it ends.
  7. 1:21Notice the small movement in your belly when you breathe.
  8. 1:33Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
  9. 1:45Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  10. 1:57Each time your mind hands you the question mark over your ability, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  11. 2:17Let the fear that you are not enough be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
  12. 2:38Notice where your body is still holding something. Leave it alone.
  13. 2:50Stay with it.
  14. 2:58Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  15. 3:10Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  16. 3:21If your mind is quiet, don't grab at it. Quiet comes and goes too.
  17. 3:35Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
  18. 3:47We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  19. 3:57If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
  20. 4:10Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
  21. 4:23A few seconds of nothing now. That's on purpose.
  22. 4:34Nothing about the small voice saying you cannot has to be explained or justified in this room.
  23. 4:49Notice how the question mark over your ability changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  24. 5:06If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  25. 5:20Notice if you've been frowning at your own thoughts.
  26. 5:31Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  27. 5:44A gap. Don't rush to fill it with thinking.
  28. 5:55Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  29. 6:06Stretch whatever feels stiff, then carry on.
  30. 6:16Before you open your eyes, notice how you feel compared to the start. It might be small.
  31. 6:31Let this one be unhurried.
