About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 7 minutes of body scan for financial stress, between meetings. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this between meetings

  • Start it in the gap, not after the next one begins
  • Write down the open thread from the last meeting first, then let it go
  • Two minutes done beats five minutes planned

The back-to-back day is exactly why the gap has to be protected rather than used for one more task.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00There is nothing to get right here. Nothing is being scored.
  2. 0:12Visit each area with plain curiosity, not with a verdict. Sensation is information, not a problem.
  3. 0:27There's a difference between relaxing and stopping. We're aiming for the second one, gently.
  4. 0:41Notice whether your breathing is high in your chest or low in your belly. Just notice. No fixing.
  5. 0:57Let the breath get soft, the way it goes when someone is reading beside you.
  6. 1:11Notice where you feel the breath most clearly. Nose, chest, or belly — pick one and stay there.
  7. 1:27Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
  8. 1:39Feel your heart somewhere in there, doing its work without instructions.
  9. 1:51Notice your shoulders, one at a time. The left one first.
  10. 2:03Give the fear about money in the night a shape, a colour, a temperature. Turning it into something specific makes it easier to hold.
  11. 2:22Let the arithmetic that will not balance be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
  12. 2:42Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
  13. 2:53Let the pause stretch out.
  14. 3:02Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
  15. 3:16Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  16. 3:28I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  17. 3:40We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
  18. 3:57Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  19. 4:09Feel the slight stretch at the very bottom of the exhale.
  20. 4:21I'll step back. You stay here.
  21. 4:31You are allowed to be unimpressed by the worry that follows the bills. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  22. 4:47the fear about money in the night may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
  23. 5:06Notice if your breathing is faster than you expected. Don't correct it. Just note it.
  24. 5:20Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  25. 5:33Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
  26. 5:44I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  27. 5:56Move at the speed of your attention, not the speed of a checklist. There is no schedule to keep.
  28. 6:12Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
  29. 6:24Come back to your body first, and the rest of the day second.
  30. 6:37Stay here a little longer.
