About this practice
Slow, spoken guidance for financial stress. A body scan session you can do on a rest day. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this on a rest day
- Do it without a reason or a target
- Later in the day, unhurried, in good light
- Let it be longer than usual if you want
Rest that has to be justified is not really rest. This one is allowed to be pointless.
How body scan works
A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.
- Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
- Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
- Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point.
- 0:15We will travel down through the body, one region at a time, and leave each one softer than we found it.
- 0:32Bring your attention to where your body meets the surface underneath you.
- 0:45Bring your attention to the parts of you that are already still.
- 0:58Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
- 1:11Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
- 1:25Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
- 1:37Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
- 1:49Feel your calves, front and back.
- 1:59Picture the arithmetic that will not balance as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
- 2:18If the worry that follows the bills has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 2:36Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 2:50Let it be this simple.
- 2:59Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
- 3:12Feel your forearms, from the elbow down to the wrist.
- 3:24Notice anything you're holding onto from earlier today.
- 3:35A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 3:45If a region feels numb, that is a finding too. Note it and move on.
- 3:59Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
- 4:10Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 4:21Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
- 4:32Notice where the fear about money in the night lives in your body. Chest, throat, stomach. Rest your attention there without trying to change it.
- 4:51If the arithmetic that will not balance starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
- 5:08Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 5:22If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
- 5:35Notice the tone of your own inner voice. Is it kind?
- 5:47Silence. Let your shoulders drop again if they've crept up.
- 5:59Your only job is to notice what is there, region by region, without fixing anything.
- 6:13Come back slowly. There's no prize for finishing fast.
- 6:24Let your eyes open when they're ready, not when the words end.
- 6:37No rush to move on.
