About this practice

Slow, spoken guidance for financial stress. A gratitude session you can do on a Sunday. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this at the weekend

  • Do it without a schedule to justify it
  • Later in the morning, in better light, usually works well
  • Let the length be open-ended if the time allows

Recovery is not something you have to earn first, and treating it as a reward keeps it conditional.

How gratitude works

Gratitude here is an attention practice, not a demand for a positive mood. Attention defaults to threats because they are urgent, so pleasant and ordinary things get skipped simply for being safe.

  • Pick one ordinary thing rather than something impressive
  • Stay with it for two breaths — depth beats length of list
  • Do not aim at feeling grateful; aim at noticing

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop.
  2. 0:12Small efforts are the whole method.
  3. 0:22Let the rhythm of your breathing set the pace, not the words.
  4. 0:35You can think about other things. When you notice, come back. That's the whole practice.
  5. 0:49Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  6. 1:02Let your breathing find the rhythm it uses when you're almost asleep.
  7. 1:15Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
  8. 1:29Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
  9. 1:41Notice the weight of your thighs, all the way down.
  10. 1:53Now the right shoulder. Let it be a centimetre lower than it was.
  11. 2:06Let your throat soften. There's nothing to swallow right now.
  12. 2:18If the arithmetic that will not balance is loud right now, make your attention smaller. Just the next breath. Nothing beyond it.
  13. 2:36If the worry that follows the bills has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
  14. 2:54Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
  15. 3:08You do not have to solve the fear about money in the night in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  16. 3:28When the arithmetic that will not balance presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
  17. 3:48Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  18. 3:58Remain here for a few more breaths.
  19. 4:08Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
  20. 4:22Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
  21. 4:34Stay a moment longer than is comfortable.
  22. 4:44Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  23. 4:58Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  24. 5:10Just the breath, still.
  25. 5:19Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  26. 5:34Let the whole of your right foot be heavy.
  27. 5:45Let the pause stretch out.
  28. 5:54Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  29. 6:07Feel the front of your chest. Notice it rise and fall once.
  30. 6:20Let this one be unhurried.
  31. 6:29Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  32. 6:40Notice where your body is still holding something. Leave it alone.
  33. 6:52Keep following the air.
  34. 7:01A short silence. Let it be empty.
  35. 7:11Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  36. 7:22Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  37. 7:34Quiet for a moment. No need to fill it.
  38. 7:45There's no need to try harder than this.
  39. 7:56Notice if you're being hard on yourself about any of this.
  40. 8:08I'll step back. You stay here.
  41. 8:18We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  42. 8:32Notice any tension that arrived while you weren't looking.
  43. 8:43Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  44. 8:53We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  45. 9:03Notice anything you're holding onto from earlier today.
  46. 9:14Pause here. Count three breaths if you need an anchor.
  47. 9:26If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  48. 9:39Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  49. 9:53Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  50. 10:05Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  51. 10:15Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
  52. 10:27If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
  53. 10:41I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  54. 10:53You do not have to like the worry that follows the bills to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
  55. 11:10When the fear about money in the night arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  56. 11:30Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
  57. 11:43You have been carrying the arithmetic that will not balance for a while. You can set it down for the length of this session and pick it up after.
  58. 12:04Notice the space around the worry that follows the bills. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  59. 12:23Let your belly rise first, then your chest, then the tops of your lungs.
  60. 12:37Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  61. 12:50If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  62. 13:04Notice any urge to check something. You can wait two more minutes.
  63. 13:17Let's pause. Just the breathing for a while.
  64. 13:28You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  65. 13:41No need to open your eyes yet.
  66. 13:51Take a moment to notice you did this for yourself. That's not nothing.
  67. 14:04Give your hands a stretch before you go back to using them.
  68. 14:17Take the next breath slowly.
