About this practice

A 15-minute body scan session for financial stress, on a break. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 15 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this on a break

  • Leave the room if you can
  • Do not start anything else in the same gap
  • Set a timer so the break has an end

A break spent half-engaged with a screen is not much of a break. Guard the whole five minutes.

How body scan works

A body scan moves attention systematically through the body, region by region. It does not try to change what it finds — it builds a map of what is actually there, which is often different from what you assumed.

  • Move slowly, head to feet or feet to head, and do not skip the uncomfortable areas
  • Meet each region with plain curiosity rather than a verdict
  • Numbness and absence of sensation are findings too

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Part of you is still in the last conversation you had. That's fine. It can sit here too.
  2. 0:16You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  3. 0:29Notice your own pulse somewhere. Wrist, throat, wherever you can find it.
  4. 0:42We're going to move through the body in order, roughly from top to bottom.
  5. 0:56Breathe as if you had all evening. There's no rush in this part.
  6. 1:09Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
  7. 1:21Let the whole of your left foot be heavy.
  8. 1:32Feel your hips. Wide, heavy, and doing nothing.
  9. 1:43Feel your upper back against whatever is behind it.
  10. 1:54Feel your face. It's probably softer than it was five minutes ago.
  11. 2:07Feel your tongue sitting in the bottom of your mouth.
  12. 2:19You are allowed to be unimpressed by the fear about money in the night. Indifference is a legitimate response.
  13. 2:35You do not have to solve the arithmetic that will not balance in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
  14. 2:55Let the exhale fall out rather than pushing it.
  15. 3:06Let the exhale carry a little of the worry that follows the bills with it. Not all of it. Just a little, one breath at a time.
  16. 3:26If the fear about money in the night has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
  17. 3:45Notice your whole body as one shape, sitting or lying here.
  18. 3:57Stay here a little longer.
  19. 4:06Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
  20. 4:21Feel your ankles. Let them be loose.
  21. 4:31Take the next breath slowly.
  22. 4:40Notice your breathing getting quieter on its own, without you deciding anything.
  23. 4:53Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
  24. 5:07Stay with it.
  25. 5:15Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
  26. 5:28Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
  27. 5:39Let the quiet do its work.
  28. 5:49Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  29. 6:02Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
  30. 6:14Nothing changes for a moment.
  31. 6:23Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  32. 6:37Notice your shins, which take small knocks all day and never complain.
  33. 6:50No need to open your eyes yet.
  34. 7:00Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
  35. 7:11Silence for a few breaths. Nothing to do in it.
  36. 7:23Nothing here needs to be efficient.
  37. 7:33Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  38. 7:47Let me stop talking. Follow the breath instead.
  39. 7:58We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
  40. 8:08Notice if your attention is in the future. Bring it back to the room.
  41. 8:22Nothing to follow for a moment except your own breathing.
  42. 8:34Let this be easy, if easy is available.
  43. 8:45If nothing much is happening, that's not a problem. Nothing much is often the point.
  44. 8:59No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
  45. 9:10If you only manage half of it, that's half more than nothing.
  46. 9:23If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
  47. 9:37Let's rest here in silence. It's short.
  48. 9:47We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  49. 10:01If a song is stuck in your head, let it play in the background.
  50. 10:15A short silence. Let it be empty.
  51. 10:25There's no need to try harder than this.
  52. 10:36Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
  53. 10:48Notice the breath you're taking right now. That's the only one that exists.
  54. 11:01I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  55. 11:13Let the arithmetic that will not balance be exactly as big as it is, and let your breath be exactly as slow as it is. They can coexist.
  56. 11:33If the worry that follows the bills starts telling you a story, let the story finish without you adding to it.
  57. 11:50Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  58. 12:01Notice the space around the fear about money in the night. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
  59. 12:20When the arithmetic that will not balance arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
  60. 12:39Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
  61. 12:52Notice the pull to make this mean something. It doesn't have to.
  62. 13:05You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
  63. 13:17Notice any part of you that wants this to be over.
  64. 13:29I'll be quiet for a moment. Stay with the breath.
  65. 13:41Small efforts are the whole method.
  66. 13:51Let this one be unhurried.
  67. 14:00Notice the room again: the sounds, the temperature, the light.
  68. 14:12Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
