About this practice

A 3-minute grounding session for the afternoon slump, on a day off. No app, no account — press start. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: the afternoon slump

The post-lunch dip is a normal circadian low, not a failure of willpower. Core temperature and alertness both dip in the early afternoon.

It tends to show up as:

  • Heavy, foggy middle of the day
  • Struggling to stay with anything
  • Reaching for sugar or caffeine

The dip is temporary. A short practice gets you through the low without adding stimulants on top of it.

Doing this on a rest day

  • Do it without a reason or a target
  • Later in the day, unhurried, in good light
  • Let it be longer than usual if you want

Rest that has to be justified is not really rest. This one is allowed to be pointless.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Start by hearing the furthest sound you can find.
  2. 0:11We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
  3. 0:25Notice the pause at the end of each breath. It's short, but it's there.
  4. 0:39Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
  5. 0:52Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
  6. 1:03Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
  7. 1:14Notice how the heavy middle of the day changes shape when you stop resisting it. Usually it gets smaller, not bigger.
  8. 1:31Whatever the 3pm dip is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
  9. 1:45Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  10. 1:58Imagine the post-lunch fog as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  11. 2:15If you feel restless, that's a feeling, not a failure.
  12. 2:27You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
  13. 2:40Stand up when you're ready. The list hasn't grown while you were here.
