90-minute focus block for data work — vinyl crackle, when you are doing this for the first time
A timer, a short prep list, and 90 minutes to work through the numbers.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Nothing needs to be decided in the next few minutes. Park the decisions. If this is your first go, stay with the plainest version of the instructions. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
- Notice the moment your hand moves toward your phone. That moment is the whole skill.
3 When it ends
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
- Have a drink of water before you check anything.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
If this block does not fit, try Deep work timer: 25 minutes of portfolio work (a fan or air conditioner), when you have woken up too early, Deep work timer: 90 minutes of research (white noise), when your attention is scattered or Focus session for coding: 45 minutes, a fan or air conditioner, when you have woken up too early.
