50-minute brainstorming session with vinyl crackle and a timer, when you feel fine and want to stay that way
Sit down, press start, and generate options for 50 minutes. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Notice where your body touches the chair. That contact is doing more for you than it looks. Feeling fine is a good reason to do this, not a reason to skip it. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
- Choose one question to answer in this block, rather than a whole subject to cover.
- Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
3 When it ends
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
- Do not immediately open the thing you were avoiding. Give the block a proper end.
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
