Focus session for practising an instrument: 50 minutes, forest at dusk, when you want something simple

50 minutes of practising an instrument, with forest at dusk and a note on what to do when you drift.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. This works better when you don't overthink it.

1 Before you start

  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
  • Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.

2 While the timer runs

  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.

3 When it ends

  • Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
  • Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
  • Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.

4What to put on

forest at dusk — Birds settling, leaves moving, nothing sudden. It works because it sounds like a place you can safely ignore.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
