Focus session · problem solving · 50 min
50-minute focus block for problem solving — a washing machine, when you want something simple
A timer, a short prep list, and 50 minutes to stay with the difficulty.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point. Simple is the point. There is no advanced version to graduate to. Keep it simple: breath in, breath out, notice.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Clear the surface in front of you down to the thing you are working on.
- Accept that the first five minutes will feel like wading. Wading counts.
- Decide now what you will do when the timer ends. Otherwise the decision will eat the first five minutes.
2 While the timer runs
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
a washing machine — Domestic, mechanical, and oddly steadying. The sound of something else being dealt with.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
