Focus session for practising an instrument: 90 minutes, birds at dawn, if you are doing this in the middle of the day

90 minutes of practising an instrument, with birds at dawn and a note on what to do when you drift.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Midday is an underrated time for this. Follow the instructions and let the rest look after itself.

1 Before you start

  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
  • Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
  • Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
  • Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.

2 While the timer runs

  • When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
  • If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
  • When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.

3 When it ends

  • Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

birds at dawn — Bright but not sharp. Better for early sessions than for late ones.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
