Focus session for editing: 25 minutes, a fireplace, if you are doing this instead of scrolling
25 minutes of editing, with a fireplace and a note on what to do when you drift.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Put both feet flat on the floor and let them take some of the weight. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- If your mind is already racing, write down the three loudest thoughts before you begin.
- Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
- Lower the bar until starting feels almost silly, then start.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
