50-minute studying session with a fireplace and a timer, when you feel restless rather than tired
Sit down, press start, and take in the material for 50 minutes. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
If you're tired, you can let that be true. Tired is allowed here. Restless is different from tired, and it needs a different approach. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
- Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
2 While the timer runs
- When you get an idea for something else, park it. Do not follow it.
- If you are bored, the boredom is usually the last thing before something clicks.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
3 When it ends
- Resist the urge to review the work straight away. Come back to it later with fresh eyes.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.
4What to put on
a fireplace — Crackles and a low roar underneath. Warm, irregular, and undemanding.
