A 90-minute block for editing, with café murmur, if you are doing this instead of scrolling
A single 90-minute block for editing — the boring pass that makes it readable.
90:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Sit however you were already sitting. You don't have to straighten up first. Choosing this over scrolling counts as a good decision, even a small one. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
2 While the timer runs
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
- Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
