Focus session for editing: 90 minutes, vinyl crackle, when you have just finished work

90 minutes of editing, with vinyl crackle and a note on what to do when you drift.

90:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. The gap right after work is the easiest one to use. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.

1 Before you start

  • Write down the one thing you are going to do, in a single sentence, before you start.
  • Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
  • Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
  • Plan to leave the last two minutes for writing down where to pick up next time.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.
  • If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
  • When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
  • The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.

3 When it ends

  • Decide whether the next block is the same task or a different one. Do not drift into it.
  • Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
  • Put the notes you made where you will find them next time.

4What to put on

vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
