Deep work timer: 25 minutes of data work (a stream), when you feel fine and want to stay that way
One block of data work with a stream underneath. One pomodoro, long enough to get somewhere and short enough to start.
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Check your hands. Are they doing anything? Let them stop. Feeling fine is a good reason to do this, not a reason to skip it. No preamble. We start with the body.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Expect to want to stop at about the eight-minute mark. That is normal and it passes.
- Dim the screen slightly. Bright screens make long sessions harder than they need to be.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- If a thought will not leave, give it one line on the page and return to the task.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
