45-minute focus session for coding with vinyl crackle, when you feel fine and want to stay that way
45 minutes on coding — one function at a time, not the whole system. A single class period, the length most people can hold before the quality drops.
45:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Feeling fine is a good reason to do this, not a reason to skip it. We'll go through it in order, without much decoration.
1 Before you start
- Decide what counts as done for this block. "Two pages" is better than "make progress".
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
2 While the timer runs
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
- If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
- When you notice you have drifted, do not restart the block. Just come back and carry on counting from where the timer is.
- Notice whether you are working or performing work. They look similar from the outside.
3 When it ends
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
- Leave the file open if you are coming back. Closing it makes restarting harder.
4What to put on
vinyl crackle — A thin layer of surface noise over nothing much. Just enough texture to stop the room feeling empty.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
