A 50-minute block for reading, with café murmur, when you feel restless rather than tired
A single 50-minute block for reading — pages rather than paragraphs.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Nothing needs to be decided in the next few minutes. Park the decisions. Restless is different from tired, and it needs a different approach. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.
1 Before you start
- Get water now, so you do not have to get up in fifteen minutes.
- Let go of the version of this task you imagined doing perfectly.
- Go to the toilet first. It sounds trivial until you are mid-sentence.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Have a piece of paper beside you for the thoughts that will try to interrupt.
2 While the timer runs
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- The first urge to stop usually arrives early. Sit through it once and the second one is quieter.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- Roll your shoulders and your neck before the next block.
4What to put on
café murmur — The blur of other people talking, with none of the words close enough to follow. Some people concentrate better with a low level of company.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
