A 25-minute block for data work, with a library, when you feel fine and want to stay that way
A single 25-minute block for data work — checking as you go.
25:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Feeling fine is a good reason to do this, not a reason to skip it. This is a short one, so let's use the time properly.
1 Before you start
- Turn off notifications for the next block, not just to silent.
- Decide that today's session does not have to be good. It has to happen.
- Close the door, or put headphones on, whichever signals "working" to the people around you.
- Decide in advance that a bad sentence is still progress.
- Make sure your chair is at a height where your feet are flat on the floor.
2 While the timer runs
- When you catch yourself re-reading the same sentence, stop and write down what you were looking for.
- When you finish a piece, pause for three seconds before starting the next. It keeps the pace honest.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
3 When it ends
- Look out of a window for thirty seconds. Your eyes have been at one distance for a while.
- Note what you actually got done, not what you meant to get done.
- If it went badly, note one thing that worked anyway. There is usually one.
4What to put on
a library — Almost nothing: distant footsteps, a chair, a page turning. Useful if you want the feeling of a room where work is normal.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
