50-minute drawing session with a washing machine and a timer, when you are short on time

Sit down, press start, and fill the page for 50 minutes. Fifty minutes, the length of a therapy hour, with ten minutes off afterwards.

50:00

Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.

Your breathing doesn't have to change yet. Let it be whatever size it currently is. Pick this one when you are short on time. We'll be efficient and then you can get on with your day.

1 Before you start

  • Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
  • Tell yourself the goal is time spent, not output produced.
  • Put your phone in another room, or in a drawer you cannot reach without standing up.
  • Give yourself permission to stop when the timer ends, even mid-sentence.
  • Close every tab that is not needed for this one task. Not minimised — closed.

2 While the timer runs

  • If you are suddenly sleepy, stand up for ten seconds and sit back down.
  • It is fine to stare at the wall for a minute. That is often where the answer is.
  • If you feel restless, change your posture rather than your task.
  • If you start tidying your desk, that is avoidance. Sit back down.

3 When it ends

  • Have a drink of water before you check anything.
  • Take the break away from the screen, even if it is just the other side of the room.
  • Write down the question you could not answer, so it has somewhere to live.

4What to put on

a washing machine — Domestic, mechanical, and oddly steadying. The sound of something else being dealt with.

This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
