Focus session for portfolio work: 50 minutes, a stream, when you only have a few minutes
50 minutes of portfolio work, with a stream and a note on what to do when you drift.
50:00
Press start. The timer keeps time so you do not have to look at a clock.
Let the floor take your weight through your feet, and stop holding yourself up for a second. A few minutes is the whole requirement. This works better when you don't overthink it.
1 Before you start
- Take one slow breath before you press start, so the session has a beginning.
- If you are dreading it, make the first action physical: open the file, sharpen the pencil.
- Put the thing you keep reaching for out of arm's reach.
- Remind yourself that you are allowed to produce something mediocre in the first pass.
- Set the timer where you can see it, or where you can deliberately not see it.
2 While the timer runs
- When you have drifted for the fifth time, that is still four returns. Keep going.
- If nothing is working, write badly on purpose for two minutes.
- If the task suddenly feels impossible, make it smaller rather than stopping. One paragraph. One function. One row.
- When the timer feels too long, look at it less. The clock is not the task.
3 When it ends
- Say the session is finished, out loud if you can. It marks the boundary.
- Leave the desk tidier than you found it. Two minutes now saves ten later.
- Write one line about where to start next time. Future you will be grateful.
4What to put on
a stream — Running water with small variation. Softer than rain and less repetitive than a fan.
This page is a tool, not a course. Nothing is tracked, nothing is saved, and nobody is told whether you finished.
