About this practice
3 minutes to meet financial stress with less of a fight. A noting practice, before an interview. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this before an interview
- Do it where you will not be interrupted, even if that is a stairwell
- Have the first sentence of your answer ready afterwards
- Keep it short — there is no time for a long session
Nerves before an interview are normal and not something to eliminate. You need access to what you know, nothing more.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Start with the noise that is already in the room. We are not going to try to remove it yet.
- 0:17Notice the gap between the label and the next thought. That gap is what we are practising.
- 0:32Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
- 0:50If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
- 1:04Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 1:18Feel the parts of you that have gone quiet.
- 1:29Each time your mind hands you the fear about money in the night, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
- 1:49the arithmetic that will not balance may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 2:07Feel the air as it passes the back of your throat. It's cooler going in.
- 2:21If the worry that follows the bills has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 2:39If you're distracted by a sound, let the sound be the object for a moment.
- 2:53If noting feels like too much, drop it and just follow the breath. The label is optional.
- 3:08Let your breathing be completely ordinary again.
