About this practice
When financial stress shows up in the morning, this 3-minute noting session gives you somewhere to put it down. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this in the morning
- Do it before checking your phone — the first minutes set the tone for the rest
- Sitting up is better than lying down, or you will drift back to sleep
- Light on your face helps more than any practice
Mornings can become a performance of productive habits. This one does not need to be done well.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Find one place in your body that already feels fine. Use that as the starting point.
- 0:15Use one plain word, not a sentence. The moment you explain, you have joined in.
- 0:29Let your breathing find its own pace. We're only going to watch it.
- 0:42Let your breathing get quieter rather than deeper.
- 0:53Count four breaths silently. Then stop counting and just follow.
- 1:05Notice the backs of your knees, which you feel more than you think.
- 1:18Picture the arithmetic that will not balance as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
- 1:37Feel the weight of the worry that follows the bills somewhere specific, then let the floor take a share of it.
- 1:54Feel the last part of the exhale, where it turns into nothing.
- 2:07You do not have to like the fear about money in the night to breathe through it. Liking was never the requirement.
- 2:25If a worry shows up, name it quietly and let it sit beside you.
- 2:39Notice the gap between the label and the next thought. That gap is what we are practising.
- 2:54Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
