About this practice
3 minutes to meet financial stress with less of a fight. A grounding practice, at midday. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: financial stress
Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.
It tends to show up as:
- Lying awake doing arithmetic
- A clenched stomach opening the bank app
- Irritability about small spending
At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.
Doing this at lunch
- Do it before eating rather than after, so you are not working against digestion
- Leaving the desk matters more than the session length
- Take the headphones off afterwards so the break registers
A break that happens at the same desk is only half a break.
How grounding works
Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.
- Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
- Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
- Return to solidity whenever attention drifts
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing.
- 0:12Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
- 0:26Now let your attention move from the room into your body, slowly, the way you'd move through a doorway you know well.
- 0:44If you're holding your breath at the top, stop. There's no need to hold anything.
- 0:58Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
- 1:10Feel the tops of your thighs.
- 1:20When the worry that follows the bills presses in, put a hand on your chest or your belly. Warmth and pressure are anchors your body already trusts.
- 1:40the fear about money in the night may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 1:59Let the in-breath be short and the out-breath unhurried.
- 2:10Whatever the arithmetic that will not balance is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 2:26If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
- 2:39Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
- 2:55Take one more breath at your own pace, then let your attention come back to the room.
