About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 7 minutes of noting for appreciation, in the afternoon slump. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: appreciation
Appreciation deepens by staying, not by listing. A moment held for two breaths registers differently from a moment catalogued.
It tends to show up as:
- Rushing past small kindnesses
- Not noticing ordinary comforts
- Thank-yous left unsaid
Slowing down for a moment is what turns something pleasant into something that stays with you.
Doing this in the mid-afternoon
- Sit upright and open a window if you can
- Expect heaviness rather than fighting it
- A short session here beats a longer one that never happens
The dip is a normal circadian low. You are riding it out, not correcting a fault.
How noting works
Noting is a technique from insight practice: when something arises, you give it a single plain label — thinking, hearing, planning — and return to the anchor. The label creates a small distance between you and the content.
- Use one word, not a sentence — explaining means you have joined in
- Label and return; do not follow the thought to see where it goes
- Drop the labelling if it becomes effortful and just follow the breath
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Take one breath that is slightly slower than the last one. That is enough to start.
- 0:15You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 0:28We're going to move through the body in order, roughly from top to bottom.
- 0:42Feel the small movements your body makes to keep you upright. They're happening without you.
- 0:56Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
- 1:09Notice how many breaths you take in a minute. Don't change the number, just check.
- 1:23Notice your toes, starting with the big one on the left.
- 1:35Feel the soles of your feet. All the weight of you goes through them.
- 1:49Feel the outline of yourself, from the top of your head to your heels.
- 2:03the overlooked kindnesses may quiet down, or it may not. Either is fine. We are practising staying, not performing calm.
- 2:20This is not the last time the ordinary moments worth savoring will visit. That is not bad news. It means you will get more practice.
- 2:39Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 2:51Let it be this simple.
- 3:00Feel the air move past your upper lip. It's the coolest spot on the way in.
- 3:15Notice your eyebrows. They're probably doing something small right now.
- 3:27You might be planning something. Notice the planning, then come back.
- 3:39A short silence. Let it be empty.
- 3:49Nothing here needs to be efficient.
- 3:59Notice the difference between a thought and the space around it.
- 4:11Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 4:22No words for a moment. Only the next breath.
- 4:33You do not have to solve the thank-you waiting to be said in these few minutes. Your only job is to keep breathing while it is here.
- 4:53Whatever the overlooked kindnesses is doing right now, your breathing can keep going underneath it.
- 5:07Feel the pause at the top of the in-breath. It's shorter than you think.
- 5:21If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
- 5:34Notice if you're waiting for something to happen. Nothing is scheduled.
- 5:46I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
- 5:58We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
- 6:08Notice if anything has loosened. Even slightly counts.
- 6:19Before you open your eyes, notice how you feel compared to the start. It might be small.
- 6:34Nothing changes for a moment.
