About this practice
For the times in the evening when guilt takes up more room than you would like — 3 minutes, grounding. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: guilt
Guilt replays past choices to try to change them. The replay cannot alter the outcome, so the relief never arrives.
It tends to show up as:
- Replaying decisions you cannot undo
- Apologising for things long since settled
- Feeling you owe something unnamed
This is not a practice for absolution. It is a place to put the weight down for a few minutes, which makes it easier to carry after.
Doing this in the evening
- Dim the lights first — bright light works against the point
- Put the phone in another room
- Keep it slow rather than interesting
Something too engaging will wake you up rather than wind you down.
How grounding works
Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.
- Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
- Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
- Return to solidity whenever attention drifts
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Then find the nearest sound. It's probably your own breathing.
- 0:12We'll keep it quiet and unhurried.
- 0:22If some part of you is resisting this, that resistance is worth noticing too.
- 0:36Follow three breaths and let the fourth one go unobserved.
- 0:48Follow the breath down into your belly and feel it come back up.
- 1:01Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 1:13There is a part of you that has handled hard moments before. That part is here now, even if it is quiet.
- 1:31Say to yourself: this is uncomfortable, and I can stay with it for one more breath. Then take that breath.
- 1:48Breathe in through your nose and out through your nose, if that's comfortable.
- 2:01Each time your mind hands you the weight of what you should have done, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
- 2:22If you're sleepy, sit up a little. Or let the sleepiness be there.
- 2:35You can be as unimpressive as you like for the next few minutes.
- 2:48Take one more breath at your own pace, then let your attention come back to the room.
