About this practice

Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 7 minutes of grounding for financial stress, on a train journey. A guided session of about 7 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.

What this works on: financial stress

Money worry runs at night, when there is nothing to do about it. The lack of any available action keeps the nervous system activated for hours.

It tends to show up as:

  • Lying awake doing arithmetic
  • A clenched stomach opening the bank app
  • Irritability about small spending

At 2am there is no decision to make, only a night to get through. That is the whole job of this practice.

Doing this on a train

  • Pick a window seat if you can and let the view do part of the work
  • Set an alarm for your stop
  • Keep the bag on your lap rather than unfastening to find it later

The motion can make reading or screens uncomfortable, which is another reason audio works better here.

How grounding works

Grounding brings attention to physical contact and the immediate environment. It works on the principle that the body cannot be somewhere else, so contact with the surface you are on is always available as an anchor.

  • Feel the contact points — feet, seat, back — and let them take your weight
  • Use the senses deliberately: what you can see, hear, touch
  • Return to solidity whenever attention drifts

What happens, minute by minute

  1. 0:00Feel your ribs move. That is all the machinery you need to pay attention to right now.
  2. 0:15Name what you can see, hear and touch. Counting senses is not a distraction; it is the practice.
  3. 0:31Let your breathing find its own pace. We're only going to watch it.
  4. 0:44Everything that happens in the next few minutes is allowed to happen.
  5. 0:57Notice the small gap after each exhale. Rest there for half a second.
  6. 1:10Let the out-breath be a little longer than the in-breath, without forcing it.
  7. 1:23Notice your lower back. Let it curve however it curves.
  8. 1:35Notice your ribs on both sides. Wide, not squeezed.
  9. 1:46Feel your palms. Warm or cool, either is fine.
  10. 1:57Picture the fear about money in the night as a weather front passing over. You are not the weather. You are the sky it moves through.
  11. 2:16Each time your mind hands you the arithmetic that will not balance, treat it like a leaf on a stream. Present for a moment, then carried on.
  12. 2:36Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
  13. 2:48Stay here a little longer.
  14. 2:57Breathe in for four, out for six, if you'd like something to count.
  15. 3:10If your mind has wandered, that's not a mistake. Noticing is the practice.
  16. 3:23A few quiet breaths. That's all this is.
  17. 3:34Press down slightly and feel the push back. Your body already knows where it is.
  18. 3:48Notice the exact moment your attention left. You probably won't catch it. That's normal.
  19. 4:02Notice the small pause before your body decides to breathe in again.
  20. 4:15I'll stop for a moment. Take the pause at your own speed.
  21. 4:28Imagine the worry that follows the bills as a room you can walk out of for a minute. The room will still be there.
  22. 4:47If the fear about money in the night shows up, let it be there without arguing with it. You are not trying to remove it, just to sit beside it.
  23. 5:08Feel your breath move down your back, all the way to your lower ribs.
  24. 5:22Notice how you're sitting. Adjust if you need to. Then settle again.
  25. 5:35If you feel numb, that's a valid thing to feel. Nothing to fix.
  26. 5:48I'll leave a gap here. Use it however you like.
  27. 6:00If your mind has gone somewhere else, the floor under you has not moved. Start from there.
  28. 6:15Before you open your eyes, notice how you feel compared to the start. It might be small.
  29. 6:30Come back at your own speed. The room will wait.
