About this practice
Nothing to learn and nothing to fix: 3 minutes of softening for guilt, ahead of a full day. A guided session of about 3 minutes, suited to all levels. Nothing is recorded and no account is needed.
What this works on: guilt
Guilt replays past choices to try to change them. The replay cannot alter the outcome, so the relief never arrives.
It tends to show up as:
- Replaying decisions you cannot undo
- Apologising for things long since settled
- Feeling you owe something unnamed
This is not a practice for absolution. It is a place to put the weight down for a few minutes, which makes it easier to carry after.
Doing this before a busy day
- Do it before the first message or notification
- Aim for steadiness rather than energy
- Decide the first task afterwards, not during
The point is to begin without already being behind, not to prepare for every possibility.
How softening works
Softening is the practice of releasing held tension degree by degree rather than all at once. It targets the physical grip — shoulders, jaw, gut — that persists long after the stressor has passed.
- Soften one place per exhale rather than everything at once
- Let warmth and gravity do the work instead of muscular effort
- If a place will not soften, leave it and go somewhere that will
What happens, minute by minute
- 0:00Keep your eyes open if you like, resting on one point of the floor a metre or two ahead.
- 0:16Let this be easy, if easy is available.
- 0:27You can let your eyes close now if they weren't already.
- 0:39Let the breath be shallow if shallow is what your body wants.
- 0:52Let the breath be slow enough that you can hear it, just barely.
- 1:05Notice your fingers, one by one, starting with the little finger.
- 1:17If the weight of what you should have done has been with you all day, it is probably tired too. Let it rest alongside you.
- 1:36When the replay of past choices arrives, name it once, quietly, and go back to the breath. Naming is not fixing, and that is fine.
- 1:55Let your shoulders stay still while your ribs move.
- 2:06Notice the space around the self-blame that lingers. It is there, even if it is small. Put your attention in that space.
- 2:24If you're irritated, that's allowed. Irritation is just weather.
- 2:35We'll take this slowly, and there's no version of this where you get it wrong.
- 2:49Before you open your eyes, notice how you feel compared to the start. It might be small.
